An Enemy of the People is a play by a Norwegian playwright, Henrik Ibsen. The play talks about Dr. Stockmann who has discovered that the new baths built in his town are infected with bacteria and instructs the town to repair or close the baths. The Mayor, Peter Stockmann who is also Dr. Stockmann’s brother, does not believe the report and refuses to close the baths because it will cause the financial ruin of the town.
Dr. Stockmann tries to reveal this truth to the town’s people, but the mayor intervenes and explains to the people that it will cost them a lot of money to repair the baths. He explains that the Doctor is always filled with wild, fanciful ideas. In a public meeting, he has his brother voted as an enemy of the people. After this, the doctor’s house is destroyed and the landlord evicts him out of his house. He and her daughter get fired from their jobs. Despite all these problems, Dr. Stockmann plans to leave the town, but at last, decides to stay and fight for the things he believes to be right; declaring that “the strongest man in the world is he who stands most alone.”
