UNIT VI: RADIO AND TELEVISION DRAMAS

           VII.1. RADIO DRAMA

Radio Drama/Audio drama is a play that is read by actors for radio broadcast rather than performed on the stage. Since there is no visual component, the audience listens without watching. Radio drama depends on dialogue, music, and sound effects to create the images in your mind, to develop the characters and plot, to indicate the passage of time.

It is very common for radio to exploit sounds and music effects to enhance values of their products. Radio in particular purely depends on voices and sound effects. It hardly has another way through which it could communicate to listeners.

     1. Sound effects in Radio/Audio drama

Sound effects are the sounds that are created artificially to make a play more realistic, especially a radio play. They are also, artificially created or enhanced sounds that are used in artistic works to emphasize or express an action, mood, or feeling.

Examples: footsteps, door slamming, animal sounds, gunshots, the sound of a car, music, etc.

Sound effects were initially used in radio dramas, but can be observed more often today in podcasts, theatre, films, and television shows. Sound effects may also be used in the background of a scene to create anticipation or other emotions.

Different sound effects bring out different moods in drama, like anticipation, possible danger, fear, joy, etc.

     VII.2. TELEVISION DRAMA

A television drama is a category of narrative fiction or semi-fiction intended to be more serious than humorous in tone. Television dramas are visual. This means that the audience watches and listens at the same time.

     1. Visual effects

Visual effects (VFX)  is the process by which imagery is created or manipulated outside the context of a live-action shot in filmmaking and video production. It is also the process of creating moving images or imagery, enhanced or manipulated with the help of Computer Graphic Imagery (CGI). These effects are added to a scene later during post-production after primary imagery is complete.

Examples:

• When a plane crashes or when someone is beheaded and dies. Another instance is when a computer is used to create animals or other beings that do not really exist.
• When there is an explosion in a flat house, and then the whole house is destroyed

Visual effects involve the integration of live-action footage (which may include in-camera special effects) and generated imagery (digital effects) to create environments that look realistic, but would be dangerous, expensive, impractical, time-consuming, or impossible to capture on film.

Digital effects cover various processes by which imagery is created or manipulated with or from photographic assets. Digital Effects often involve the integration of still photography and computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create environments that look realistic but would be dangerous, costly, or impossible to capture in camera.

     2. Special effects

They cover any visual effects that take place in live-action. The special effects (SFX) are all realized on set. This means that they happen in reality, in a physical and tangible way, to create a condition that would not occur naturally or spontaneously.

Special effects are generally described as the effects that can be done while the scene is being filmed, and they are usually accomplished during the live-action shooting.  They are commonly called practical/mechanical/ physical effects.

Example: When an actor runs through a real forest in flames or swims in a real lake.

In few words, the special effects are applied on the set during production, while the visual effects take place in post-production by using computer technology.

    VII.3.  SOAP OPERAS

Soap opera is a radio or television serial, typically broadcast in the afternoon or evening, about the lives of melodramatic characters, which are often filled with strong emotions, highly dramatic situations, and suspense.

It is a series of television or radio programmes about the lives and problems of a particular group of characters. The series continues over a long period and is broadcast (several times) every week.

A soap opera is a radio or television serial dealing especially with domestic situations and is frequently characterized by melodrama, ensemble casts, and sentimentality. They are called so because they were initially sponsored by soap factories.

  VII.4. SERIES

A television or radio programme consists of several episodes that are broadcast in regular intervals. It is also a group of episodes of a television or radio programme broadcast in regular intervals with a long break between each group, usually with one year between the beginning of each.

A film series or movie series (film franchise or movie franchise) is a collection of related films in succession that share the same fictional world or are marketed as a series. The series is also called “season” in North America.

Examples: Wild Flower, The Avengers, Money Heist  (La casa de Papel, “The House of Paper”), El Internado (The Boarding School), Cobra Kai, Game of Thrones,…..
